What is Mastering?

What is Mastering?

Great question!

In theory, Mastering is the process by which we take the mixed tracks (sometimes as stems, other times as a single WAV file), and prepare the song for the radio.  Otherwise referred to as "radio ready" or "broadcast ready".

Other objectives include Mastering for CD, streaming, and vinyl.

Hence, it's super important for us to know what your purpose is for Mastering.  Because if you don't have a purpose to Master, you might not need to master your song, at all!

The process looks something like:

  1. Songwriting
  2. Arranging
  3. Demo tracking
  4. Re-arranging
  5. Final tracking
  6. Mixing
  7. Mastering

As you can see, Mastering is last stage in the process of producing a song.  It is the step that puts the final touches, or polish on the whole mix.

A lot of bands think of Mastering as just the stage where the mix gets louder.  This is somewhat true, but might not even be the case, at all.

Sometimes, the mix sounds so good and the levels are already so loud, all we do is give it a blessing.

Other times, there can be some serious work to do.  You know, like that time you had to book a whole day at the dentist cos you forgot to brush and floss your teeth for that year you were away at college.

;-)

Submitting high quality materials allows the mastering engineer to be creative with the mastering process, and inevitably saves time (and money) for you, the producer.

How much does it cost for you to master my tracks?

$25 per song.
